From comfortable seats in a bus designed to give the maximum viewing, local guides who have the knowledge of, and passion for, all that is Yarmouth, lead an entertaining journey of exploration into Yarmouth town and environs - past and present. The stories of the many stately Victorian homes, and who occupied them, give a glimpse into the history of the area. The guides take pride in explaining how life in an area so closely tied to the sea has evolved to keep pace with the needs of sea-based economies.
Guests of the Rodd Colony Harbour Inn are picked up on site. The bus trip lays out a list of options of things to do and places to visit. The bus passes all three of the town's museums and it mentions some of the highlights of buildings that can be viewed even better by following a leisurely walking tour. Late afternoons or early evenings are perfect for a walk. The guides tell of legends from the days of wooden ships and iron men.
The tour leaves the town and makes its way down the opposite side of the harbour, passing beaches that are great for combing. At last it reaches the spot of disembarkation. The Yarmouth Light. The apple core design is the only one of its type in the province. Through the diligence of the local municipal government and the Friends of the Light Society, this beacon that has served so many seafarers is still standing. The Friends of the Light Society has done a magnificent job of making the Light a terrific place to visit. The grounds are meticulously maintained and flowers bloom in profusion. There are lots of benches and picnic tables and both a gift shop and exhibit centre. The views from the crest of the hill seem to go on forever, and from here both Yarmouth's Real Harbour and the False Harbour that lured in many early ships are visible.
At some point the guide will note the arrival at Yarmouth Bar. This is not a beverage break but rather a bar of land that almost reaches out to Cape Forchu. The gap had to be bridged by a structure that would withstand crushing breakers, but also provide some protection to the fishing fleet that tie up here. Processing facilities are located here as well. It's a great place to explore and a special spot for camera buffs.
Yarmouth is a seaside community in a moderate climate. As a result, fog is a fact of life here. It moves in quietly, wraps itself around hill and dale, and softens all the sounds of a workday world. On any of the uncrowded beaches, a walk on a foggy day is a vastly different experience than a walk on a sunny day. The ebbing or the flowing of the tide sounds more like a gentle lapping against the sands and stones. Sounds carry in a particular way and the whole world beyond seems to have vanished.
